Production FAQs
Drone filming FAQs for producers
Permissions, insurance, weather, booking and payment: the questions that come up on every drone, tracking and crew job, answered.
Are you CAA authorised and insured?
Yes. We hold a CAA Operational Authorisation (PDRA01) and carry £5m drone public liability insurance, upgradable to £10m. Flights under an Operating Safety Case (OSC) are available across the fleet at extra cost. We also have extensive experience meeting the insurance requirements of large agencies.
Who arranges location permissions?
Either of us. On TV and film the location team usually secures locations, and we support them with risk assessments and flight plans. Without a location team, we can arrange landowner permissions ourselves, and we often draw on a decade of local knowledge to propose cost-effective options.
Who arranges airspace permissions?
Generally, we do. Some locations, such as military airspace, the London City FRZ or restricted area R159 (Isle of Dogs), can take up to 30 days.
Can you fly in London, near airports or close to the public?
Yes, with the right permissions. Under our PDRA01 we keep 50 m from uninvolved people (30 m for take-off and landing). For London, congested areas or closer shots, we can fly under an Operating Safety Case (OSC) at additional cost. Airport and restricted airspace jobs need more notice and can take up to 30 days.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We advise making the call early. We watch the forecast with you in the days before and measure the wind on site, so you're not paying for a wasted day. The weather can change, and responsibility for the final booking lies with the production or client: our terms come with our rate card. We can also supply a rainproof drone for the shoot.
How far ahead do we need to book?
As early as you can, though there's no minimum notice and we often turn jobs round within days. Shoots near airports, in London or abroad need the most notice for permissions.
Do you only work in Cornwall?
No. We're based in Cornwall, with crew in London, and work all over the world. We've believed in collaborative networking since 2012, with crew across Europe and a tighter network across the UK and Ireland.
Can you travel abroad?
Yes. We've filmed in more than 30 countries and have often been the first drone operators given permission to fly in a new country. We can drive larger kit to Europe by ferry or freight it ahead, and we often propose kit that's easy to travel with to keep costs down.
How do we get the footage?
On the day, straight from the camera's media to your DIT, or by download link afterwards if pre-arranged, at a small extra cost.
How do quotes and payment work?
Every job is quoted, and our rate card is available on request. Invoices are on 30-day terms, and for non-broadcast clients we may ask for 50% up front. Hire is paid up front, with a deposit.
Who have you worked for?
Broadcasters and streamers including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, UKTV, Netflix and Amazon, on drama, documentary and commercials, since 2012. Honestly, it would be easier to list who we haven't worked for.
Do you work directly with brands and businesses?
Yes. As well as TV and film productions, we film for brands, agencies and local businesses, and can plan the whole shoot from concept to delivery. We pride ourselves on our deeper knowledge of the production and creative process: we were born from film and TV, not robotics.
Can you supply a full camera crew?
Yes. We can put together camera, drone, grip and vehicle crew for a shoot. See our Crew page.
