The Light Colour Sound, best of 2019. Part 2

Here’s part 2 of our the best of 2019 series. Where we wanted to re cap the best bits from last year.

Coasts of Cornwall

We have worked with the team at Boardmasters Festival for a number of years from drone coverage at the festival itself as well their headliner reveal videos.

Its one of our highlights from 2019 for a number of reason but one of the main ones is we LOVE shooting in Cornwall. We are a production company based in Newquay which means when we get the chance to create a production that uses the ocean and Cornish country side it makes us very happy.

This whole concept came from an image that looked similar to this.

The brief for this shoot as with all the reveal shoots for Boardmasters festival was to reveal the headliner in a way that hints at the name throughout the whole film without giving it away too early.

This concept came from an image where a fire backlit a shape cut out of some wood. This sparked out creative and developed into the narrative and final concept.

We used a location in the south of Cornwall. We shot in January, definitely not summer. The surfers were amazing. Normally at this time of year most surfers would be wearing boots, gloves, hoods and would never spend the day on the beach in between surfs. But as is the way of things we had our window and to make it look warm we needed to take away all the winter wetsuit accessories.

There were some very cold fingers and toes.

The whole production was produced and shot with only two crew. We like to multi role on these shoots. So the producer doubles as AC and focus puller. Our DOP is a qualified drone pilot. This means we can keep costs low, keep the production mobile and fluid allowing us to change location quickly, chase light and come away with stunning rushes. Big productions with lots and lots of crew can be slow, hard to make mobile and are expensive.

We have so much fun on these shoots. The surfers are great fun to work with, the team at Vision Nine is an amazing client and allow us lots of creative freedom. We get to shoot in the amazing backdrop of Cornwall and create a fun creative concept. Sadly this was the year that never was for Boardmasters. The weather conditions were too dangerous for the festival to run so we never got to see FOALS headline the Friday night.
