The best of 2019 from Light Colour Sound. 2019 was a fantastic year at Light Colour Sound. We worked on a whole range of productions from international commercials, crowd funding films here in Cornwall to secret car testing in the snow.

Over the next few weeks we wanted to give you an insight to just a small selection of our favourite moments. There are too many to post so we have whittled it down to a handful of the best moments and productions. We hope you enjoy them.

Surfers of Sardinia

This was one of our first larger shoot in 2019. If you have never worked on a production that involves surfing they can be the most tricky, frustrating productions to be involved with. As the entire shoot revolves around the ocean playing ball.

Add into the mix an island in the Mediterranean that rarely see’s good surfing conditions, a narrow three day window when all cast and crew can be available and you have a high pressure job on your hands. Luckily for us, this shoot had two of the best surfers and people in the business on board.

Kepa and Roby were fun, professional and willing not to take themselves to seriously for the entire shoot which made our jobs a whole lot easier.

With a VERY small crew (just two) we headed to Sardinia to meet the rest of the production and get started. In five minutes of meeting Kepa and Roby we knew this would be a great few days. These guys are two of the best surfers in Europe but also some of best in front of the camera. Roby is the ultimate performer and can turn it on like a light switch. Kepa is understated but nails everything in on the first try.

We had pitched an idea that wasn’t the norm for them or the client. Surfers can be a bit stuck in their ways and not interested in change. These two, saw the humour we wanted to bring and jumped straight in with the whole concept. Making the whole production a much easier process.

Surfing in Sardinia.

We woke up on the first morning (5am start after a day of traveling) we had been checking the surf forecast the whole way and we were excited to get this started. But as we said earlier, the ocean doesn’t always adhere to your shooting timetable. We arrived at the first surf spot to find the swell had arrived but wind was onshore.

OK, time for a total re think of the entire shoot.

Roby who was also the local fixer (he’s loved across Italy and Sardinia and the world because he is a total hero) spoke to some of the local surfers and friends of his and we were back in business. We would drive across the island to another surf spot that they knew and would be working in these conditions. This is a little bit un heard of, surfers don’t like to give away their secrets so for the local Sardinian surfers to be this accommodating was a great thing to see. They were a great bunch of people and this whole process would have been 100% harder without their amazing help and generosity.

We drove, we surfed, drank espresso, drove some more, drank more espresso and surfed a bit more. The story line was coming together nicely. The weather hadn’t lived up to the promise of perfect sunshine but we had made the most of the light and surf on offer. The final day arrived and we had a lot to get through. We had banked on the last day being good weather, we had enlisted the local surfers to be extra’s and we had found the beach we wanted for our final scene. It was all coming together.

The final day arrives, the weather is amazing, the surfers all arrived and we were on!

For the final scene we wanted Roby to do his best David Hasselhoff impression, run along the beach and dive into the sand to save a piece of rubbish from ending up in the ocean. Now he could have easily said, “guys, this is silly I’m not doing that”

His response was the opposite “Let’s do it.” He gave it his all on every take. Diving head first into the sand without hesitation every time. He was amazing.

The shoot wrapped we eat incredible food, toasted with a few beers and flew back to the UK ready to edit. It was a great shoot with some amazing people and in a beautiful location.
